Susan and I so enjoyed our Xmas together, we wondered if you’d like to share a summer holiday camping with us in France. I know of two wonderful places:
- Arradon, Golfe du Morbihan, Southern Brittany
- Collias, on the River Gard, Languedoc
Here’s a quick summary:
- the golfe du Morbihan is a huge inland sea, with 365 islands.
- Perfect to take the Mirror Dinghy
- Indoor and outdoor pools
- Near Carnac
- Half-day drive from ferry
On the amazing river Gard and the Roman Pont du Gard
- Near Uzes, Avignon, Nimes, Orange
- Great canoeing and exploring
- Outdoor pool
- Two-day drive from ferry
I have priced both holidays, taking everything into account (except food: we’d have to eat if we stayed home, and food in France is cheaper and better quality). I have priced ferry costs, fuel costs, and detailed camp site costs, and priced on the assumption that we only have 14 days total, and that we would go the first two weeks in July.
I just looked at the Somerhill term dates and got this
SUMMER 2012: Tuesday 24th April – Friday 13th July,
Half Term: Saturday 2nd June – Sunday 10th June
The best festival in the area in the South of France is the Uzès Fêtes Votives. I can’t find a 2012 date, but in 2011 it was 5-9 of August.
Much to my surprise, the South of France holiday comes out much cheaper than Brittany, even taking everything into consideration: per family, Brittany is £570, South of France is £360. I will include the cost breakdown at the end.
- Camping-car service area
- Baby bath, washing machine, tumble dryer
- Games space for adults and children: multi-sports ground, golf, ball game, ping-pong tables, etc.
- TV room
- Game room with snooker, electronic games, etc.
- Mini-shop: groceries, camping-gas, bread, croissants, newspapers…
- Swimming-pool and heated paddling pool: aquatic games, 33-metre chute, Pentogliss “4 water slides”.
Brittany Ferries, Portsmouth → St Malo, overnight with an inside 4-berth cabin, leaves Posrtmouth 20:15, arrives St Malo 08:15. (return journey is 10:30 → 18:20).
The car journey from St Malo to Penboc’h is under 100 miles and takes 2.5 hours.
We could go visit Mont St Michel after leaving St Malo, if we wanted. (In fact we’d probably want to: my guess is that they’d like us to arrive at the camp-site after 3pm, but I don’t know that).
The Golfe du Morbihan is an excellent place to sail (I have taken my Mirror there in the past) … provided you get nowhere near the entrance to the gulf (no danger … it’s a long way south) because the tide goes through there at 9 knots! But it’s fun to watch.
Fairly Sheltered Pitches
Tennis & horse riding 800m
Pont du Gard 5km
Direct access to the River
Descente des gorges
Playground for children
We would go Dover to Calais, drive one day to Vichy, stay overnight in a small hotel (Hotel Premiere Classe … it’s cheap!)
It’s about sux hours from Calais to Vichy.
Next day’s drive is about 4.5 hours to Collias, on the banks of the RIver Gard (or Gardon), near Uzes.
We wouldn’t take the Mirror … there isn’t anywhere to sail, but the canoeing in the river is fabulous, and so is the exploring … the River Gard goes to quite wild country.
